The Big Questions:

  • What genre is this in? Young Adult fiction, mystery, thriller

  • Are there any swoon-worthy characters? All the Hawthorne boys are tall, dark, handsome, and mysterious

  • Is it spicy? Some hot kisses, but that’s it

  • Is it violent or gory? Not at all

  • Should I buy, borrow, or pass on this book? It’s a fun and promising start, so I’d borrow it!

Synopsis: Avery Grambs has a plan for a better future: survive high school, win a scholarship, and get out. But her fortunes change in an instant when billionaire Tobias Hawthorne dies and leaves Avery virtually his entire fortune. The catch? Avery has no idea why -- or even who Tobias Hawthorne is.

To receive her inheritance, Avery must move into sprawling, secret passage-filled Hawthorne House, where every room bears the old man's touch -- and his love of puzzles, riddles, and codes. Unfortunately for Avery, Hawthorne House is also occupied by the family that Tobias Hawthorne just dispossessed. This includes the four Hawthorne grandsons: dangerous, magnetic, brilliant boys who grew up with every expectation that one day, they would inherit billions. Heir apparent Grayson Hawthorne is convinced that Avery must be a conwoman, and he's determined to take her down. His brother, Jameson, views her as their grandfather's last hurrah: a twisted riddle, a puzzle to be solved. Caught in a world of wealth and privilege, with danger around every turn, Avery will have to play the game herself just to survive.

Review: This was my mystery read for January and I was pleasantly surprised! I had a really fun time with this one, I mean how couldn’t I? Girl from the other side of the tracks suddenly becomes the richest teenager in the country but only if she lives in a mysterious house with a mysterious family and needs to figure out why she inherited all this money when there are four perfectly hot, smart, and potentially sinister grandsons. Oh, and did I mention three out of the four are age appropriate for our main character and at least one of them has taken an interest in her beyond hating her for stealing their inheritance? Because yeah, my teenage heart was all a pitter patter here. If you’re looking for a fun mystery with hot boys, tension, riddles, and messed up rich people, this is right up your alley.
